There are total of five verses in the Quran regarding the Holy month of Ramadan and fasting. Learn about these ayats in both Arabic and English. Ramaḍân is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the decisive authority. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. This verse highlights the significance of Ramadan as the month in which the Quran was revealed. It reminds believers of the divine mercy and guidance embodied in the Quran, encouraging them to strengthen their connection with Allah through its recitation and reflection. Allah (SWT) has granted special virtue to this month by placing Laylat-al-Qadr within it. “Indeed, it is We Who sent this Quran down on the Night of Qadr. And what will make you realise what the Night of Qadr is? “The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185). Ramadan commemorates the revelation of the Quran and coincides with Laylat al-Qadr, or the Night of Power, described as: لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍۢ تَنَزَّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن One of the key events associated with Ramadan is the revelation of the Quran, the holy book of Islam, which Muslims believe was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during this month over 1,400 years ago. Here are some verses about Ramadan in the Quran: Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ. “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous”. There are four verses in the Glorious Quran talked about fasting in Ramadan. They are: Verses No.183 , 184 , 185 and 187 in Sura Al- Baqara ( the heifer); 1. The first verse: Why fasting? In the first verse, Allah mentioned the prescription of fasting accompanied with one of its main fruits: “ O believers! This Ramadan night truly was glorious, because with the first revelation of the Holy Qur’an, Islam was born. This verse can also refer to the fact that during the month of Ramadan, the angel Gabriel would descend upon the Holy Prophet (sa) and revise as much of the Holy Qur’an as had been revealed up until that point. This verse highlights the special significance of the month of Ramadan, as it was the month in which the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Fasting during this month is not only an act of worship but also a means of drawing closer to the Quran, the divine guidance that leads believers to righteousness. So how could the Quran be revealed over twenty-three years in Ramadan, when the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) fasted in Ramadan for nine years, because fasting was not enjoined from the time the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) became a prophet, and because his prophethood lasted for 23 years. The glorious Quran was revealed during Ramadan as the ultimate guidance and criterion to distinguish truth from falsehood for the entire humanity. Fasting during Ramadan is obligatory for every able Muslim. Concessions are given for those who are ill or traveling. Ramadan is a time to glorify Allah and show gratitude for His guidance. “The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” [2:185] Ibn ‘Abbas explained that the descent of the Quran between the heavens was in order to emphasize its high status while announcing to Heavens inhabitants that this was Allah’s final revelation. Wathila ibn al-Asqa’ reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The scriptures of Abraham, upon him be peace, were revealed on the first night of Ramadan. The Torah was revealed after six nights of Ramadan had passed, the Gospel was revealed after thirteen nights of Ramadan had passed, and the Quran was Mohsin Khan: The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or This is the story of the first revelation of the Quran, a moment that forever tied Ramadan to the Quran.
