How to Fast for Ramadan in the Arctic, Where the Sun Doesn't Set One Norwegian Muslim community's clever solution to an unusual geographic problem. By Marya Hannun Muslims in the Arctic are generally advised by religious authorities to adopt one of three solutions. Firstly, if there are major practical or health obstacles to their fasting during the prescribed month, they may replace the fasting days of Ramadan with substitute days at another time of the year. Ramadan is Muslim holy month of fasting. Traditionally, fasting is observed from dawn i.e., with appearance of first light before sunrise to dusk i.e., immediately after sunset. During the fasting hours Muslims completely abstain from eating and drinking. Scholars from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other centers of Islamic learning have issued contradictory fatwas, or legal rulings, on how Ramadan should be celebrated in near-constant sunlight. But the dates or Ramadan follow a lunar calendar, so the start date changes a little bit every year and takes like 32 years to circle back. So for half of that 32 year cycle; living in Antarctica would be more favorable because of the decreased sunlight (theoretically). Ramadan is particularly challenging for the thousands of Muslims who live near the Arctic Circle. The land of the midnight sun does not offer much time for repast. It is my understanding that the 5 daily prayers as well as the times for fasting during the Ramadan are according to sunrise and sunset. My question is: How does a Muslim determine the appropriate times for the prayers and fasting if he/she lives near the Arctic Circle where nights and days can be quite long depending of the season” According to the Qur’an, Muslims must fast from dawn to sunset during Ramadan. The second relevant pillar of Islam are the five daily prayers: Fajr, Dhuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib, and ‘Isha. Maghrib and ‘Isha are undertaken at sunset and twilight respectively. How does fasting during Ramadan work in the Arctic/Antarctic? So one of the five pillars of the Muslim faith is to abstain from eating and drinking while the sun is up during the month of Ramadan; due to the difference in calendar systems, the exact dates of Ramadan drift from year to year, meaning sometimes Ramadan will start in June and other Ramadan calendar 2025 / 1446 in Antarctica and all its cities, you can modify calendar settings and show Prayer Times: Fajr,Duhur,Asr,Maghrib and Isha inside very responsive table 7 likes, 0 comments - raptor.yamaan on January 30, 2025: "RAMADAN IN ANTARCTICA #ramadan #comedy #muslim". I've asked this question during Ramadan, I live in Canada and my friend was flying up north for a work project, which would have him, during Ramadan living in a place with 24 hour sunlight. He just laughed and said, dude I draw the shades at a reasonable time for sunset and have dinner, and after breakfast in the morning put the shades back up. It would also be impossible to fast for the month of Ramadan for an entire solar day during the summer in the Southern Hemisphere, so alternatives to this problem have been proposed by multiple sources. It has been reported that Muslim scientists on Antarctica use Mecca time for Ramadan fasting. [citation needed] Ramadan in Antarctica (or Svalbard) This is a hypothetical question, as I am not a Muslim. If I were a Muslim scientist currently stationed in Antarctica (and thus experiencing permanent night) would I be obligated to fast, and if so when? Ramadan is the holy month during which Muslims across the world practice dawn-to-dusk fasting. This year, the month is being marked in a way none of us could have ever anticipated. Ramadan in 2023 began just after the spring equinox. At the two equinoxes the least extreme range of fasting periods occur. When Ramadan coincides with the summer or winter solstice, the most extreme range is found, as illustrated in the table of examples from June 2014 provided above.
