Fanous or Fanoos (Egyptian Arabic: فانوس IPA: [fæˈnuːs], pl. فوانيس [fæwæˈniːs]), also widely known as Fanous Ramadan (Arabic: فانوس رمضان), [1] is an Egyptian folk and traditional lantern used to decorate streets and homes in the month of Ramadan. As Ramadan knocks on the door, cities worldwide light up and prepare for the month of fasting. Late night malls, hotels, and offices are decorated with beautiful colorful lanterns - known as fanous in Arabic - range in size and shape. Fanous Ramadan - Arabic for lantern - is a special symbol of the month of Ramadan, especially in Egypt. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. Children now carry Fanous Ramadan and go out to the streets singing, while many people are hanging large, colorful lanterns in the streets, in front of houses, apartments, and Ramadan has its special customs and habits. One of the most interesting ones is Ramadan Lantern (فانوس رمضان). It is a lantern that people, especially children, use ONLY during the month of Ramadan. Most parents would buy their children lanterns (فوانيس), before the month begins. The Ramadan lantern (‘Fanous’ in Arabic) is a worldwide symbol used to welcome the Holy Month of Ramadan all over Arab countries, especially in Egypt where the tradition may have originated. Muslim and Arab Countries might differ in their Ramadan cultural traditions, but two Ramadan items that they have in common is the Ramadan Lantern (Fanoos), and the delicious Qatayef. Lantern means lamp and is called Fanoos in Arabic.
