Sighting the crescent to determine when the holy month of Ramadan begins is not the only moonsighting which concerns Muslims. The majority of scholars are of the view that sighting the new moon of Ramadan on the first night of the month is a communal obligation, and if all the people fail to do it then they are sinning. Crescent Moon Symbolism Across Different Fields Crescent Moon in Astronomy. The crescent moon is a lunar phase where only a small portion of the moon is visible, shaped like a thin, curved sliver. This phase occurs just after the New Moon (waxing crescent) or just before the New Moon (waning crescent). During these phases, the moon is only Waxing and waning refer to the changing illumination of the Moon as it orbits Earth. During the waxing phase, the illuminated portion of the Moon gradually increases, from a thin crescent to a full Moon. Conversely, during the waning phase, the illuminated portion decreases, transitioning from a full Moon to a new Moon.
