Overtime refers to the additional hours an employee works beyond their regular working hours. Overtime is usually not encouraged by the labour law, but the worker can do over hours in case the company is facing a gross loss or some other reason. Qatar has many laws such as wage protection, annual leave etc. During Ramadan, regular working hours have been reduced to 6 hours daily to address the fasting employees. Employers do not include travel time between accommodation and the workplace in overtime calculations. Employers must give employees 1 day off after working 6 days a week, usually on Fridays. How do you calculate overtime as per Qatar Labour Law? As per Qatar Labour Law, overtime payment should be at least 125% of regular hourly pay. In the case of working overtime between 9 pm and 6 am, this should be at least 150% of regular hourly pay. The regular hours for employees working on shift rotation shall not exceed eight hours per day, except for the month of Ramadan, where the regular shift shall not exceed six hours per day. Travel time between the employee's residence and his workplace shall not be counted as part of his working hours. To calculate overtime pay, follow these steps: Determine the regular hourly wage. Multiply the regular hourly wage by the overtime pay rate based on the type of work performed (regular hours, night shifts, or public holidays). An employee with a monthly basic salary of SR 3,000 has worked for 50 overtime hours in a month. Monthly Basic Salary = SR 3,000. For example: -I work 18 hours on monday -That is 10 hours of overtime -They distribute the 10 hours throughout the week/month so I get a maximum of 10 hours of work per day on paper As for Article 39: HR informed me that the company gets 1 hour of overtime deduction everyday for our lunch period so they only count overtime exceeding 1 hour. In line with Article 73 of Qatar's Labour Law, the standard working hours are capped at forty-eight (48) hours weekly and eight (8) hours daily, applicable throughout the year, except during Ramadan. During Ramadan, the maximum working hours are reduced to thirty-six (36) per week and six (6) hours per day.
