Basel and Samir Ramadan, brothers from West Ocean City, MD, were sentenced to prison for their involvement in a cigarette smuggling and tax evasion scheme in New York. The operation, called Operation Sidestep, involved over 1.25 million untaxed cigarettes and millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains. Samer Ramadan, one of two Ocean City residents indicted in a vast smuggling and money laundering scheme, admitted his role in the operation and faces up to six years in prison. His brother, Basel Ramadan, also faces charges for allegedly attempting to arrange for the killing of witnesses in the case.
