Taraweeh refers to the voluntary night prayers conducted after the obligatory Isha (evening) prayer during Ramadan. The term “Taraweeh” is derived from the Arabic word for “rest” or “relaxation,” indicating the brief pauses taken after every four rak’ahs (units of prayer). Tarawih (Arabic: تَّرَاوِيح, romanized: tarāwīḥ) are special Sunnah prayers involving reading long portions of the Quran, and performing up to 20 rakahs (cycles of prostrations required in Islamic prayer), which are performed only in the Islamic month of Ramadan. Taraweeh prayer, observed by Muslims men and women during the holy month of Ramadan, is a special tradition that involves night prayers extending beyond the ‘Isha’ prayer.
