Zakat is a mandatory charity required of all adult Muslims who meet the Nisab threshold. It is the Third Pillar of Islam and refers to the obligatory payment of Zakat in Islam, distinguishing it from voluntary acts of generosity like Sadaqah. According to Islamic guidelines, every adult Muslim who meets the Nisab threshold is obligated to give Zakat. Zakat in Ramadan: What It Is and Why It Matters Zakat is a mandatory charity —2.5% of eligible wealth—to support those facing poverty, hunger, and crisis. It is a spiritual obligation and a path to barakah (blessings) in this life Zakat becomes obligatory when one Hijri year has passed on the wealth in one’s possession. The scholars warn against delaying the payment of Zakat for the purpose of giving it in Ramadan. However, Zakat payment can be brought forward if someone’s Zakat becomes compulsory shortly after Ramadan. How Zakat Works . There are five pillars of Islam: the declaration of faith, prayer, fasting during Ramadan, the Hajj pilgrimage, and zakat. Zakat is a compulsory procedure for Muslims who earn Ramadan is the month of giving and benevolence. It is a month of fasting , prayer, reflection, and community. The significance of Ramadan is deeply rooted in the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Zakat Al-Mal and Zakat Al-Fitr. There are two types of Zakat that God and His Messenger, on him be peace, have obliged us to pay: Zakat Al-Mal, or Zakat on Wealth, and Zakat Al-Fitr, the Zakat of Fast-Breaking, for the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan. Zakat Al-Fitr has no minimum wealth threshold. Zakat has three main conditions set by the Prophet, on him be peace, as part of Revelation: NISAB (threshold at which zakat becomes due).
