Zakat refers to two types: Zakat-al-Mal and Zakat-al-Fitr. Zakat-al-Mal is the obligatory annual payment that can be made at any time. However, Zakat-al-Fitr (Fitrana) must be made during Ramadan, ahead of the Eid prayer. Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a fundamental act of worship and a powerful expression of compassion. It involves giving a portion of one’s wealth to those in need, purifying one’s earnings, and ensuring that resources are distributed to support the less fortunate. During Ramadan, the importance of Zakat becomes even more pronounced. In Arabic, Zakat means growth, blessing and purification. It means worshipping Allah (SWT) by obeying Him and paying what is prescribed from one’s wealth to those eligible in the light of the Quran. Zakat is surrounded by many rules and regulations, some of which are mentioned below: Zakat al-Fitr, or the Zakat of Breaking the Fast of Ramadan, is the special obligatory alms paid by all Muslims at the end of the Ramadan fasting month. Zakat in Ramadan is more than an obligation; it’s a powerful act of generosity that transforms lives. As a pillar of Islam, it purifies wealth, strengthens faith, and uplifts those in need. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reminded us: "Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Sahih Muslim 2588) Zakat, Islamic charity, is the very basis of the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims are taught to donate to the poor in generous measures. The act of giving helps the poor but also helps purify the wealth and hearts of the givers. It is also common to give Sadaqah-means of voluntary charity-during Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to emulate the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.), to assess and pay their Zakat during the month of Ramadan, thus combining the two Pillars of Islam at the same time. Zakat (alms) is the name of what a believer returns out of his or her wealth to the neediest of Muslims for the sake of the Almighty Allah. Ramadan is the holy month of obligatory fasting (sawm) for Muslims. The Quran tells us its significance.
