What is the ruling on eating or drinking during the adhan for Fajr? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If the iqama for prayer is given and the vessel is in the hand of any one of you, let him not put it down until he has finished with it.” “If the muadhdhin gives the call to prayer when the dawn has come, then the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum gives the call to prayer, because he does not give the call to prayer until dawn breaks.” What time can you eat during Ramadan? During Ramadan, Muslims can eat only between sunset and dawn. The fast begins at Fajr (pre-dawn prayer) and ends at Maghrib (sunset prayer). Suhoor is the pre-dawn meal before Fajr, and Iftar is the meal to break the fast after Maghrib. After Maghrib until Fajr, you are allowed to eat and drink freely. When fajr enters, one needs to abstain from the fast’s invalidators [mufattirat: eating, drinking, and sex]. This is the opinion of Imams Shafi’i, Abu Hanifah, Malik, Ahmad, and the majority. Whether you can eat at 7 PM during Ramadan depends on the time of Maghrib, or sunset, in your location, as the daily fast is broken at sunset. Here’s how to determine this: 1. There are two times for stopping eating during sahur (pre-dawn meal), namely a preferred time and a permitted time. Preferred time to stop eating is ten minutes before Fajr time. So if the Fajr time is 6:12 a.m., one should stop eating around 6 a.m. Fasting begins at dawn (Fajr) and ends at sunset (Maghrib), with exceptions for certain groups such as children, elderly, and travelers. The purpose of fasting includes spiritual growth, empathy for the less fortunate, and strengthening community bonds. When Can You Eat During Ramadan? Ramadan Eating Times, you can only eat and drink after breaking your fast with iftar at Maghrib (sunset). From sunset until the start of dawn, during the time between iftar and suhoor, you are allowed to eat and drink. This means that Muslims must abstain from eating or drinking anything during the daylight Do not let the fajr al-kazib (the false day break) prevent you from eating or drinking so eat and drink until fajr al-Sadiq, (the true daybreak) till the true fajr appears. (Abu Dawud, Sawm: 17; Tirmidhi, Sawm: 15) When to Stop Eating in Ramadan? Fasting in Ramadan begins at dawn (fajr) and continues until sunset (maghrib). This marks the clear boundary for food consumption. Muslims must stop eating and drinking any liquids, including water, before the first light appears in the morning sky. Allah has permitted those who intend to fast to eat and drink until they are certain that dawn has come. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your Sawm (fast) till the nightfall.” [al-Baqarah 2:187] If one mistakenly thinks that they can eat until sunrise rather than stopping at Fajr, they may inadvertently break their fast before it even begins. The Timing Debate: Fajr vs Sunrise The confusion surrounding whether to start fasting at Fajr or sunrise often stems from varying interpretations within different communities or schools of thought In Sharh al-Muhadhdhab v. 3, p. 45, in the discussion on prayer times, Imam Nawawi related from Shaykh Abu Hamid that according to Hudhayfah, Abu Musa al-Ash’ari, Abu Mijlaz, and A’mash night extends until tulu’ al-shams; and accordingly, the fajr prayer is a nighttime prayer and one fasting may eat until tulu’ al-shams as well. It doesn’t matter if you were still eating. You should have stopped eating maybe 5 minutes before the adhan. I don’t mean to sound rude but it’s going to come out that way, just because you were already eating doesn’t mean that you get to violate the rules of fasting, which you had already gone to close to the adhan with. "For More Information: More about Ramadan Rules: If you look at prayer time charts for Ramadan, you'll often see that there's either A. 2 columns-one for 'end of suhoor', one for 'fajr' where suhoor ends a few minutes before fajr. In this case, one should stop eating/drinking and start fasting a few minutes before far; OR B. 1 column labeled 'End of Suhoor/Fajr' where the adhan for fajr marks When Can You Eat During Ramadan Fasting? When Can You Eat During Ramadan Fasting? During Ramadan fasting, Muslims can eat during two main periods: Suhur and Iftar. Suhur: Pre-dawn Meal Timing: Suhur should be consumed before the break of dawn and the beginning of Fajr prayer. It is advisable to finish eating a few minutes before Fajr to ensure So now have sexual relations with them and seek that which Allaah has ordained for you (offspring), and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your Sawm (fast) till the nightfall” [al-Baqarah 2:187] Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. I misunderstood the imam when I asked about the time of imsak (abstaining from food and drink, etc.). I just found out that imsak is 15 minutes before fajr (dawn), but most of the days this Ramadan I ate a few minutes before fajr, as well as in Sha`ban when I was making up for the days I had missed during the previous Ramadan (due to menstruation).
